About Qelmorix
Founded on the edge of the Atlantic, our studio bridges the gap between traditional darkroom aesthetics and modern conservation science.
Our Origin
Qelmorix Studio began in a small converted garage in Woodstock, Cape Town, in 2014. Siddharth Varma, then a disillusioned photojournalist, wanted to create a space where the image was treated with the same respect as a physical artifact. He spent two years developing a proprietary black-and-white processing workflow that maximized the tonal range of the African light. What started as a solo venture has grown into a collaborative of six specialized artists, researchers, and master printers.
We believe that wildlife photography has largely become a race toward the loudest, most colorful, and most fleeting images. Qelmorix is the antithesis of that trend. We seek the quietude. We seek the symmetry. We seek the enduring spirit of animals that have survived millennia of change. Our studio is dedicated to the idea that a photograph is a contract between the viewer and the subject—a promise of truth and a testament to existence.
The Qelmorix Method
Immersion
We do not use hides or remote triggers for our primary series. We believe in the presence of the photographer. Our team spends an average of 40 days on-site before the first shutter release, allowing the local wildlife to become accustomed to our silhouette.
Capture
Using high-resolution medium format sensors, we capture images with a dynamic range that exceeds 15 stops. This allows us to maintain detail in the deepest shadows and the brightest highlights, a necessity for our signature high-contrast style.
Curation
The darkroom is where the image is truly born. We spend months testing different paper stocks and pigment loads. Every print is produced in-house on 310gsm cotton rag, ensuring a lifespan of over 200 years under archival conditions.

Master Printer. Lindiwe is a specialist in chemical-based toning and digital pigment transfer, ensuring every print is a masterpiece.

Conservation Liaison. Aris coordinates our field permits and ensures that our presence never disrupts the ecosystems we document.
